Knicks’ trash can thief fired by JPMorgan, was DEI exec

For a brief moment, Angie Báez became one of the most recognizable Knicks fans in New York.

Unfortunately for her, it had nothing to do with the team’s championship celebration.

Báez, a former JPMorgan Chase executive, lost her job after videos from the Knicks’ parade appeared to show her dumping trash onto a Manhattan sidewalk before walking away with a limited-edition blue-and-orange public trash can, NYPost reports. The clips quickly spread online, turning what may have seemed like a harmless souvenir hunt into a viral controversy.

JPMorgan later confirmed to the New York Post that Báez no longer works for the company.

The fallout surprised many because of Báez’s professional background. Throughout her career, she held leadership positions centered on community engagement, diversity and inclusion, and representation. She previously worked with companies including The Infatuation, Squarespace, Saks Fifth Avenue and Hudson’s Bay.

From Parade Celebration to Viral Headline

The contrast between Báez’s public image and the video footage fueled much of the online reaction.

One moment she was another Knicks fan celebrating a long-awaited championship. Days later, she found herself at the center of a story that reached far beyond basketball.

The New York City Department of Sanitation didn’t mince words when addressing the incident.

“Dumping trash onto the street and stealing public property for your own personal use are both illegal, antisocial behaviors, and not what New Yorkers do,” the agency said.

Despite the attention, the NYPD said it has not received any complaints related to the incident, and Báez has not been charged with a crime.

Still, the professional consequences arrived quickly. What started as a parade-day decision ended with the loss of a high-profile corporate role and one of the most unexpected viral moments of the Knicks’ championship summer.
