Knicks’ NBA Finals watch party is a full-go after NYPD lifts ban
There is no doubt that New York Knicks fans are rowdy, passionate, and thrilled for the potential to take home the Larry O’Brien trophy. New York is the mecca of basketball, but the Knicks haven’t been to the NBA Finals since 1999. They haven’t won the championship since 1973, either.
The streets of New York have been wilding ever since the team advanced to face the San Antonio Spurs. Even before hand, during the Eastern Conference Finals, the fanbase was maybe getting a little too excited. The New York Police Department banned watch parties directly outside of Madison Square Garden in Plaza 33 during the ECF because crowds were getting too rowdy. Ian Begley has reported that the NYPD is reversing the decision, at least for Game 1.
“The NYPD ban on Knicks watch parties directly outside Madison Square Garden has been lifted for tonight, per SNY sources,” Begley tweeted. “An MSG spokesperson confirmed that the Garden has applied for permits to host the Plaza 33 party tonight, and those permits have been granted. The permit is solely for tonight’s Game 1. Status for future watch parties is TBD.”
With the Knicks down in San Antonio for Game 1, the watch parties outside of the best basketball venue in the world are sure to be wild. Of course, Knicks’ fans might want to tone things down if they have any desire for future Plaza 33 watch parties, but that rambunctious group of diehards seems unlikely to change their ways. Knicks fans deserve this, though. After all, their team hasn’t made it this far in the postseason this century.
