Knicks’ Mike Brown drops strong MVP comment on overlooked Jalen Brunson

Jalen Brunson got some big MVP remarks from his head coach Mike Brown as the pair and the New York Knicks squad prepare to host the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals on Monday night.

Going into the contest, New York boasts a 2-0 series lead over San Antonio. They stunned their opponent on the road in Games 1 and 2, finding themselves two wins away from reaching the mountaintop and gifting the franchise their first title since 1973.

It’s taking a while for Brunson to get things going with his shot selection despite still being the team’s leading scorer to start the series. So far, he is averaging 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, and 2.5 steals per game. He has shooting splits of 33.9% from the field, including 23.5% from beyond the arc, and 88.9% from the free-throw line.

Brown reflected on Brunson’s efforts this season ahead of Game 3, which will be New York’s first time hosting an NBA Finals game since Game 5 in 1999. The head coach had big comments to share about his star guard, believing he was deserving of more recognition as an MVP candidate among other superstars.

“He definitely has not or did not get the attention that he deserved during the regular season. I think he’s a top 3 MVP candidate and when it comes down to those things, his name wasn’t mentioned much,” Brown said.

What lies ahead for Jalen Brunson, Knicks

Mike Brown is certainly aware of Jalen Brunson’s remarkable impact on the Knicks since his arrival in 2022.

And to be fair to Brunson, New York has been in the playoffs every year since he joined them. They made the Semifinals in his first two years before getting to the East Finals in 2025. Now they’re in the NBA Finals and two wins away from winning it all, making all the more sense o believe in Brunson’s place as one of the best in the entire league.

Following their Game 3 contest against the Spurs, the Knicks will prepare to host Game 4. The matchup takes place on June 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
