Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns highlights ‘special’ strength fueling historic wins

NEW YORK – The New York Knicks led the Philadelphia 76ers by as many as 40 points in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. That was 10 more than they needed to make history.

Mike Brown’s group became the first NBA team in the play-by-play era to lead by 30 points or more in three consecutive playoff games. Monday was also the fourth-straight game in which they held their opponent under 100 points.

The group is showcasing new ceilings on both ends of the court. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns found league-leading success in the pick-and-roll in February and have continued that success into the playoffs. Their dynamic even showed new form in the first round, when Towns thrived as a playmaker against the Atlanta Hawks.

In just that one series, the center became the only Knick besides Walt “Clyde” Frazier with multiple postseason triple-doubles for the franchise. Both Brunson and Towns credited increased communication for their chemistry and production. But they aren’t the only Knicks benefitting from the culture of accountability developed in the locker room.

Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby show championship chemistry in Knicks’ win

Towns and starting wing OG Anunoby spent almost an entire timeout conversing amongst themselves during the third quarter of Monday night’s blowout win. Asked postgame about the importance of his relationship with Anunoby to their success, Towns said his entire cast of teammates deserves equal praise.

“It’s special. I’m very close with OG, but I love all of our guys. For us to be executing at this level speaks to the unity our team has right now, and the sacrifice being made by all of us for the greater good of the team. You see it- even in our games in Atlanta, it was just a total team effort. And I think tonight, as well, was a total team effort. Everyone came to execute our game plan. And I thought we did a great job of doing our best to execute,” the center explained.

Towns will gladly be the first to mention that any in-game discussions are only a sliver of reality. But the center pivoting focus to his entire cast of teammates certainly does support his notion of unity. Whether he and Anunoby were agreeing or arguing, it was fueled by their shared goal of winning an NBA Championship. If the result of Monday’s game was any indication, the conversation helped.

Losing teams ignore their problems all the way to the NBA Draft Lottery. Winning teams acknowledge their problems and work through them. The Knicks’ stars seem willing to forego ego in search of ways to win. The vibes at Madison Square Garden might just reach immaculate status sometime in the near future if New York keeps taking the harder path.
