Kings coaches sustain injuries after wild Game 2 incident vs. Avalanche

The Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche played for a long, long time in Game 2 on Tuesday night. The Avalanche defeated their first-round opponent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs after an electric overtime period. However, adding to the game time was one of the more chaotic incidents in Stanley Cup Playoff history.

In the second period, forward Quinton Byfield received a penalty shot. The game was still scoreless at the time, so a goal would have swung the momentum toward Los Angeles. However, Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood made a magnificent save to keep the game tied. Following the save, a Colorado fan pounded the glass behind the Kings’ bench so hard that it broke.

The glass rained down on interim Kings head coach DJ Smith and some members of his staff. Game 2 went into a near 20-minute delay as the glass was cleaned up and the broken pane replaced. On Wednesday, it was revealed by longtime Kings broadcaster Jim Fox that some coaches sustained minor injuries.

“Just an FYI…we were informed this morning that the 1 man that (was) responsible for the glass breaking, was removed from his seats behind the bench. Did not hear if there any further action was taken? Coach Smith did have minor cuts on his head and coach Brown had minor cuts on his face, nothing too serious as far as injuries go, but still a very serious (situation),” Fox said on social media.

The Kings went on to lose the contest in overtime thanks to a Martin Necas game-winner. Down 2-0 in the series, Los Angeles will need to dig deep in order to prevent a sweep from being completed on home ice. These teams return to the ice at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Thursday for Game 3.
