Kevin O’Connell stays silent on Vikings GM search

The Minnesota Vikings are conducting their rookie minicamp at the team’s headquarters in Eagan, Minnesota. While they are starting to prepare for the 2026 season, there is still a big hole in the team’s hierarchy. The Vikings don’t have a permanent general manager and it could take days or weeks before they make a decision on the executive that will fill that position.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell had developed a strong partnership with former general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, but he was fired shortly after the Vikings finished the 2025 season. O’Connell is not one to interfere with the hiring process. When he was asked if he would have any input on who the Vikings might hire to fill the empty GM spot, he was clearly deferential to Chief Operating Officer Andrew Miller and the team’s ownership.

“Whatever capacity that ownership and Andrew have me playing, that’s what I’m going to do,” O’Connell said.

The Vikings finished the 2025 season tied for third place in the NFC North with the Detroit Lions. Both teams had 9-8 records but the Vikings moved above the Lions in the standings because they swept the season series from their long-time rivals.

The Vikings started the season by losing eight of their first 12 games and were out of playoff contention early. Starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy was troubled by injuries and inconsistency, and the Vikings did not have an adequate backup on hand. That deficiency played a key role in Adofo-Mensah’s dismissal.

The Vikings have brought in former Cardinal Kyler Murray to compete with McCarthy, and those two will presumably battle through training camp before O’Connell names the team’s starting quarterback.
