Kentucky, Louisville, BYU in the mix for Rob Wright

The 2026 NCAA College Basketball Transfer Portal features Rob Wright as one of the more intriguing options. Wright delivered 18.1 points per game with BYU basketball this past season. The Cougars lost him to the portal Wednesday and since has Louisville plus Kentucky reportedly interested.

Yet BYU still holds a chance to lure him back, per Joe Tipton of On3/Rivals Thursday. He listed the Cougars as one of four early contenders to bring in Wright.

“Kentucky, Ohio State and Louisville are among the programs to monitor for Rob Wright, the No. 5 overall player in the portal. His list is expected to grow, as many programs are in need of a starting point guard,” Tipton wrote in his report.

But again, Wright can very well run it back in Provo.

“There is also a chance he could return to BYU, though things remain fluid,” Tipton adds.

Wright returning reignites BYU’s chances to make another March Madness run. Plus can offset the inevitable loss of AJ Dybantsa to the NBA Draft. Re-adding Wright earns him the opportunity to rise as the next leading scorer for BYU.

The 20-year-old even went off for consecutive 30-point nights in February: Dropping 30 on Baylor then 39 against Colorado, the latter occurring during Valentine’s Day. He even delivered damage to nationally-ranked Texas Tech in averaging 27.5 points against the Red Raiders.

BYU faces a crucial offseason that once again features Dybantsa potentially landing first overall in June’s draft. The Cougars likely need to hit the portal hard with no point guard signed through the 2026 recruiting class. Bringing back Wright eases the worry. But he has other big-name suitors.
