Kamden Lopati picks Michigan after decommitting from Illinois
While it is still early in the offseason, the Michigan Wolverines are staying busy in the recruiting department. On Tuesday, the program managed to land Kamden Lopati, a talented quarterback in the 2027 class, who had previously committed to the Illinois Fighting Illini.
Reports indicate that Lopati is a four-star quarterback recruit who plans to play for Michigan in 2027, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports and Rivals. Coming out of West Valley City, Utah, he is considered the No. 9-ranked quarterback in Rivals’ Industry Rankings.
“BREAKING: Four-Star QB Kamden Lopati has Committed to Michigan, he tells me for Rivals,” reported Fawcett. “The 6’3, 228 lbs QB from West Valley City, UT recently decommitted from Illinois. He’s ranked as the No. 9 QB in the 2027 Rivals Industry Rankings.”
Although he had previously committed to Illinois, Lopati also received offers from notable programs, such as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, California Golden Bears, and Boston College Eagles. At the end of the day, he will seemingly begin his collegiate career, likely as a backup option behind Bryce Underwood at Michigan.
Kamden Lopati is set to join a Wolverines quarterback room with Underwood, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi, and Colin Hurley. There is still a ton of time between now and when Lopati finally goes to college, so it’ll be interesting to see if he opts to remain with Michigan or potentially decommit again.
The Wolverines aim to turn the page and begin a new chapter under head coach Kyle Whittingham. After the drama that unfolded under Sherrone Moore, a fresh start with an experienced head coach could do wonders for the Michigan program.
