Justin Thomas looking to repeat history at PGA Championship with sizzling Sunday 65

The PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club features an incredibly bunched leaderboard. A two-time champion put a charge into that leaderboard and is the leader in the clubhouse at five-under par. Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship at Southern Hills in 2022 from seven back of the lead. Now, he hopes to repeat history at Aronimink.

Thomas started the day even par, six shots behind the 54-hole leader Alex Smalley. But early in the day, the wind died down, and Thomas was able to shine. He made six birdies and just one bogey to shoot his best round of this PGA Championship at 65. Now, he waits in the clubhouse as the leaders struggle around Donald Ross’ Philadelphia gem.

In 2022, Thomas was seven shots behind Mito Periera at Southern Hills in Oklahoma. The difference was that only five men sat between Thomas and Periera entering Sunday. There were over 20 players within four shots of Smalley entering Sunday this year, and Thomas was not one of them.

Thomas sputtered out of the gates, making three pars and a bogey in his first four holes. The front nine has been the easier side so far this week, but the two-time PGA winner did not show that on Sunday. He made three birdies on the front and three more on the back to shoot 65.

The PGA Championship is far from decided, and weather forecasts cannot be trusted at Aronimink Golf Club. Much of the conversation entering the week was about how the pros would crush a shorter course in benign weather. But the wind howled on both Thursday and Friday, pushing many of the world’s best out of contention.

There has been a first-time major winner in each of the last 11 seasons. Many of the contenders at this PGA Championship would be first-time winners, including Smalley, Matti Schmid, Nick Taylor, and Ludvig Aberg. But Thomas, alongside Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, lurk as the biggest names in the game.
