Josh Windass confirms Wrexham transfer stance amid exit links and promotion heartbreak

Wrexham’s dream of a Premier League promotion may have been scuppered – but Josh Windass has given fans a huge boost.

The 32-year-old joined Shaun Custis and Henry Winter on the Sunday Edition to confirm he will be staying at the Racecourse Ground.

Windass linked up with the Welsh club on a free transfer last summer following the expiration of his contract at Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite an offer from Brazilian giants Santos earlier in the 2025 winter transfer window, he decided to join Championship newcomers Wrexham.

He penned a three-year deal with the Hollywood-backed club, and has become an instant cult hero.

Wind in his sails

The attacking midfielder chipped in with 16 goals and five assists from 41 Championship outings.

No Wrexham player had ever scored as many goals in a single season in England’s second-tier.

Only Swansea striker Zan Vipotnik [23], Hull centre-forward Oli McBurne [17] and Covenry’s Haji Wright [17] fired in more times in the Championship than Windass.

His dazzling displays saw him named as Wrexham’s Player of the Season.

And he could have been competing in the play-offs had Wrexham beat Middlesbrough on the final day of the campaign.

Windass equalised to make it 1-1 with a stunning free-kick from 30 yards, but his side were forced to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw – with Hull leapfrogging them into sixth.

But it’s not all bad news for fans, with Windass insisting he will be part of their squad next term as they look to gain promotion to the top-flight for the first time in their history.

The news will come as a major boost given the ex-Rangers star had been linked with a return to Ibrox earlier this season.

Rumours have also circulated on social media that the player could be heading off to the MLS.

Quick to shut that down, Windass said on the Sunday Edition: “Yeah, it must be a fake account because I’m not.

“I’m going to America on holiday in the next few weeks, that’s about it.”

When pressed whether he can confirm his plan is to stay at Wrexham, Windass then remarked: “Yeah, I signed a three-year deal in the summer.

“I feel like I had a really good year this year, and yeah, hopefully next year we can go one better.”

Though Windass insisted he remains gutted his season is over as he alluded to the two 0-0 draws in the Hull vs Millwall and Middlesbrough vs Southampton semi-final first legs.

Asked whether he is feeling ‘not so cheery’ following Wrexham’s final day heartache, he said: “Yeah, especially after watching them two play-off games as well, it was even worse.

“No, I was disappointed to obviously miss out of us having such a good season and coming so close, obviously.

“The closer you get, the worse it feels.”

He later added: “I think now we’re a week on, I’m obviously over it a little bit, but the [Wrexham club] awards night was the day after the Middlesbrough game.

“And yeah, it took me a couple of days to [get over it], my wife weren’t too happy because I weren’t very good around the house.

“Obviously I thought it was our time to do it and my time specifically, I was really ready to go to that next level.

“Things happen, you’ve got to get over it.

“And then the next year we’ll be trying our hardest, like we did this year as well, trying our utmost hardest to get to that next level.”
