The 63-year-old completed the move after Real Madrid paid the €15million compensation to prise Mourinho away from his Benfica contract.

The Portuguese outfit have appointed Marco Silva as his successor after Silva left Premier League club Fulham.

Mourinho’s first day in his second spell in the job will be July 13, when Real Madrid’s pre-season begins.

The Special One replaces Alvaro Arbeloa, who had been in charge on a temporary basis following Xabi Alonso’s exit in January.

His arrival comes off the back of the club’s first trophyless season for five years.

As well as finishing second behind Barcelona in LaLiga, Real Madrid also lost to their bitter rivals in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Meanwhile, they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the last 16 by second-tier Albacete.

As for the Champions League, Los Blancos were beaten 6-4 on aggregate by Bayern Munich at the quarter-final stage.

Mourinho’s appointment marks the start of his second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu having previously been in the dugout between 2010 and 2013.

During that time, the 63-year-old won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

He now arrives after a nine-month spell in charge of Benfica, where he is set to be succeeded by Marco Silva.

Real Madrid transfers

Mourinho is set to add three players immediately after joining for a second time.

Ibrahima Konate is heading to the Spanish capital after failing to agree fresh terms at Liverpool.

Right-back Denzel Dumfries is also joining from Serie A title winners Inter Milan to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And perhaps the most eye-catching of the lot could see Bernardo Silva join forces with Mourinho.

talkSPORT understands the Manchester City legend is in advanced talks with Los Blancos, who made a late swoop for him amid interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
