Jonathan Toews hints at future with Jets after return season

The Winnipeg Jets signed Jonathan Toews last summer, giving the future Hall of Famer a chance to return to hockey with his hometown team. Toews sat out two seasons as he dealt with issues relating to illness and COVID-19. In 2025-26, he was able to play a full 82 games for the first time since 2018-19.

Toews did not have the most productive season for the Jets. However, he provided a bit of depth down the lineup. He scored 11 goals and 29 points this season, helping Winnipeg make a bit of a run at a playoff berth near the end of the year. Toews has not decided his future in the NHL, but he knows where he would like to play if he returns.

“I really loved being part of this locker room this year. If I decide to play next year, I’d love to be a part of this group. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” the future Hall of Famer said in a video posted by Sportsnet on social media.

The Jets got off to a very slow start and were near the bottom of the NHL for much of the season. However, Winnipeg found some momentum following the NHL Trade Deadline. In the end, they finished 35-35-12, good for 82 points. This placed them eight points back of the Los Angeles Kings for the West’s final Wild Card spot.

There is a lot of work to do for Winnipeg this summer if they wish to return to the playoffs. No matter what, though, they would certainly benefit from Toews’s leadership if he elects to return to the ice for one more season in 2026-27.
