Jonathan Givony shares strong AJ Dybantsa vs. Darryn Peterson opinion

The NBA Draft is immediately intensifying this debate following Sunday’s lottery: AJ Dybantsa versus Darryn Peterson. Longtime draft expert Jonathan Givony dropped a strong opinion on the matter, though, based off what he’s really seen.

The man behind Draft Express gave a blunt take with Zach Lowe Monday. He doesn’t have the BYU Basketball star going first overall.

“I have Darryn Peterson going one,” Givony told Lowe. “I was a little bit surprised how the consensus has shifted. Now I know Darryn Peterson didn’t have the season he wanted. But I’ve seen those guys on the same floor in person probably 8-10 times…Not once did I come away thinking AJ Dybantsa is a better prospect than Darryn Peterson.”

Givony doesn’t just include the regular season matchup involving Dybantsa facing the Kansas basketball star. He watched the two prized freshmen go after each other during the Under-16 landscape at the high school level.

Givony still doubled down on his hot take involving Peterson showing more potential than the projected top overall pick.

“AJ Dybantsa is a great prospect and I have a pretty good feeling he’s going to be an all-star. But Darryn Peterson is on another level talent wise,” Givony said.

Peterson drew hefty criticism, though, for cramping during late games and dealing with injuries. That sparked questions on his durability in the NBA. Givony encouraged those fans to go back and watch Peterson before those setbacks, particularly watch closely at the Peterson versus Dybantsa battles.

“Darryn Peterson was head and shoulders better than AJ Dybantsa every single time,” Givony said.

One likely will land with either the Washington Wizards or Utah Jazz.
