Joe Espada’s concerning Yainer Diaz injury update will catch Astros fans’ attention

Houston Astros Yainer Diaz suffered an unfortunate left oblique strain injury on Monday during batting practice. With Diaz on the 10-day IL, manager Joe Espada shared a concerning update about the five-year veteran.

Espada claimed that Diaz, who is 27 years old, is going to miss a good chunk of time because of the injury, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. The club may be without its starting catcher for an undisclosed amount of time.

“Yainer Diaz will be out ‘a while’ with his left oblique strain, Joe Espada said,” reported Rome.

Diaz suffered the injury during batting practice before Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which resulted in an 8-3 loss for Houston. Just one day after the injury, the Astros placed Yainer Diaz on the 10-day IL.

The Astros will have to rely on Christian Vazquez and Cesar Salazar behind the plate for the time being. Vazquez will get the start on Tuesday against the Dodgers. Hopefully, they can at least help defensively, but Houston will be without one of its main options on offense for the time being. Yainer Diaz’s injury is not likely to be season-ending, but for now, his timeline for recovery is up in the air.

Diaz was having a solid start to the campaign before sustaining the left oblique strain. Through 101 at-bats, he managed to record 25 hits, two home runs, and 14 RBIs, giving him a .248 batting average and .264 OBP.

We’ll see how the road to recovery plays out. Yainer Diaz will be out for at least 10 days. But it sounds like he could be out for a little longer than that, based on Joe Espada’s comments on Tuesday.
