Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivers bizarre explanation for Yankees loss to Rays

The New York Yankees have cooled off after opening the season with a hot start. Following a disappointing loss in extra innings to the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, New York infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. made a statement about what happened at the end of the game.

Chisholm bobbled a ground ball that ended up biting the Yankees. Video of that play was shared on social media by Talkin’ Yanks.

Chisholm tried to explain what happened during postgame interviews.

“I was really going to go try to tag the runner and just throw it to first. I don’t know what the rule is. If I went to first base first and threw it back to second, if it’s still an out. Is it still a double play? I don’t know. Does it count as not an RBI?” Chisholm said, per MLB.com.

Chisholm made the statement following the game, surrounded by reporters at his locker. One of his teammates was standing nearby and heard that statement.

“No, they’ll score. They’ll get there before the tag occurs at second,” Yankees star Trent Grisham answered. That caused Chisholm to offer a quick reply.

“Oh. Well, what I was trying to do in my mind probably wouldn’t have worked anyway,” Chisholm said.

It was a truly tough ending for the Yankees. New York had a lead late in the game, but Tampa Bay just kept chipping away at that lead.

“Very happy with the way the guys responded after it could have been easy to be frustrated, given how we felt like we were in control or had the lead there at the end and then gave it away,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said, per MLB.com. “But they stayed at it.”

New York lost Saturday’s game 5-4, to drop to 8-6 overall this season. The Yankees have now lost four in a row.
