Jayson Tatum joins 6 other Celtics legends in franchise playoff history
BobThe Boston Celtics cruised to victory in Game 1 of their opening round playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers with a 123-91 win. It was the star duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum who led the way for the Celtics in their Game 1 playoff win, and in the process Tatum joined several franchise legends when it comes to rebounding.
Jayson Tatum finished with 11 rebounds in Game 1, and by doing so, he became only the seventh player in Celtics franchise history to reach 1000 career playoff rebounds as per team coverage manager Taylor Snow. The six players before him to reach that mark in the playoffs are Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Robert Parish, Dave Cowens, Kevin McHale and John Havlicek, respectively.
He also finished with 25 points, seven assists and two steals in a little over 32 minutes. It was Tatum’s first playoff game since suffering the Achilles injury during last season’s Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks.
Amid questions as to whether or not he would play this season, Tatum made a remarkable return to the Celtics’ lineup in early March. He appeared in 16 games to end the regular season at a little over 32 minutes per game.
Tatum averaged 21.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals with splits of 41.1 percent shooting from the field, 32.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 82.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
Even with Tatum’s absence, the Celtics were one of the best teams in the East, and once he returned to the lineup, they were able to lock down the No. 2 seed in the standings. With him back, the Celtics are once again a legitimate contender for a championship.
