Jason Varitek’s wife seems to hint at departure from Red Sox after 3 decades

The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora on Saturday night, as well as several coaches. Red Sox game planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek, who once played for the team, was to be re-assigned. It appears that may not be the case, as Varitek’s wife Catherine shared a social media post thanking the team.

“Red Sox Nation, Thank you. For the love, support, and loyalty you’ve shown to my husband for the past 3 decades. Forever grateful,” Catherine Varitek posted to X, formerly Twitter, along with a heart emoji on Sunday.

That post caused team reporters to question whether Jason was actually sticking around.

“This doesn’t sound like Jason Varitek will continue in the organization, which has been the suspicion around the situation since he was let go or “re-assigned,'” MassLive reporter Chris Cotillo posted to X.

Jason was a fan favorite when he played for Boston, from 1997-2011.  He was catcher for the Red Sox, and appeared for two World Series championship teams in Boston. He was named an All-Star three times.

Following his playing days, Jason Varitek started working as coach for the organization in 2021.

Red Sox are cleaning house and trying to salvage the season

It was a great shock to Major League Baseball when it was announced Saturday night that Cora was getting the boot. Boston fired Cora shortly after his team defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 17-1.

“Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude,” Red Sox owner John Henry said in part in a statement, per CBS Sports. “He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived.”

The Red Sox are 10-17 on the season. Chad Tracy is the Red Sox interim manager.
