Jason Kelce hits the ice ahead of Flyers playoff opener vs Penguins

The Philadelphia Flyers rode their second-half-of-the-season resurgence to earn a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs. They will meet their in-state rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. This matchup has already captured the attention of hockey fans in the Keystone State, and it has also gotten the attention of other athletes from the state.

Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has retired from competition in the NFL, but his past association with a Super Bowl champion team has given him access to other major sporting events. A week after serving as a caddy in the Par-3 tournament at the Masters, Kelce put on his skates and got to go out on the ice prior to the Flyers practice session at the team’s training center.

Kelce is becoming something of a Walter Mitty-type character in his post-football career. Many thought his brother Travis would overtake him on the popularity front because of his relationship and engagement with pop superstar Taylor Swift, but Jason is more than holding his own.

The Flyers hope to do more than hold their own in the playoffs against the Penguins. Pittsburgh goes into the battle led by veteran superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and those two would love to demonstrate that they can still fill the net and lead their team deep into the postseason.

The Flyers have their own core of key players with Travis Konecny, Trevor Zegras, Christian Dvorak and Matvei Michkov. While the Flyers’ top players can’t compete with Crosby and Malkin in star power, they have hustle and desire as their primary characteristics.

The series gets underway Saturday night in Pittsburgh and will be televised by ESPN.
