Jason Cundy: I genuinely don’t want Tottenham to get relegated – and this is why

Jason Cundy genuinely doesn’t want to see Tottenham get relegated – and not just because The Sports Bar’s content would suffer.

The talkSPORT co-host has become the viral face of national mockery towards Spurs as the club edges ever closer to the Championship.

The 56-year-old has delighted in giving his old team both barrels and has even earned calls to receive a knighthood for services to banter.

With his lopsided Ange Postecoglou mask and clown outfit, Cundy has successfully ragebaited ex-Tottenham midfielder and Sports Bar co-presenter Jamie O’Hara into walking out of the studio… TWICE.

In fact, the most recent of which this month became the most viral episode of the talkSPORT show, with over ten million views.

A post-Spurs relegation Sports Bar would definitely obliterate those figures, and yet Cundy admitted he doesn’t want that to happen.

Why Cundy doesn’t want Tottenham to get relegated

The Chelsea hero left his Postecoglou mask at home for an appearance on talkSPORT Drive on Friday alongside Darren Bent.

Yet Cundy couldn’t help but steer the conversation towards Tottenham when discussing Nottingham Forest’s current plight.

Reacting to Benty saying that Vitor Pereira’s side were fourth bottom, Cundy replied: “Only a point behind Spurs…”

He continued: “I’ve said this, I’ve been consistent. I don’t want Spurs to go down.”

Why? “Because the Premier League is, it’s not a great league, and there are only so many games.

“I go to Stamford Bridge, and I rock up, and I’m lucky enough to go and get paid to watch it. I go in the gantry, I cover every game.

“There are six games every season. Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United, Man City, West Ham.

“Throw West Ham in there because their fans are great when they come to Stamford Bridge. After that, Brentford. I mean, Fulham.

“No, seriously. There’s only six games I really go to, and I look forward to.

“And when the fixture list comes out, you go straight to the first game of the season, last game of the season, Boxing Day.

“Once you’ve covered those three, you go, right, when are we at home and away to Arsenal? Spurs. If you take that game away from me as a fan, I mean, plus we’d lose six points.

“We’d miss the six points. But would you not, do you not think there’s some, because it’s not a great Premier League…”

Bent then put forward Newcastle and their fans, who Chelsea are welcoming to Stamford Bridge this weekend.

“Okay, I mean, yeah. I mean, fair enough,” Cundy added.

“Yeah, I mean, I’ll throw Newcastle. We got them on Saturday, right, so when I see you next, I’ll let you know what it was like.

“So yeah, maybe Newcastle. Newcastle’s maybe half a point.”

Chelsea vs Tottenham ‘toxic’

Cundy has previously gone on record with his feelings on the rivalry between the Blues and the Lilywhites, with battles between the two teams have historically been explosive.

Potentially, the last Premier League meeting between Chelsea and Tottenham for at least one season could come on the penultimate match of the 2025/26 campaign in May, in which Igor Tudor’s side may find themselves on the brink.

With Liam Rosenior’s men chasing Champions League football, Cundy admitted in this scenario he’d be happy with taking the three points.

Bent said: “Even when I played at Spurs, I always felt like, and I know it’s the North London Derby. And again, the rivalry is there, I understand that. But I always felt like the atmosphere was a little bit more brutal when we played Chelsea.”

Cundy agreed, replying, “Oh, the atmosphere is unbelievable.

“It’s almost toxic. People talk about they’re going to rugby matches. Now they sit next to one another, and how lovely it is.

“I’m like, ‘No, no, no, no, you don’t want that.’ You want them over there, right? Screaming all sorts of abuse.

“And you want the rest of the stadium screaming abuse. That creates an unbelievable atmosphere.

“And I would absolutely 100 per cent miss that Spurs game.

“The caveat to that is if they find themselves in a position that we can relegate them, that’s on them.

“That’s got nothing to do with Chelsea, right? If you go to Stamford Bridge and you need three points to stay up, and we take the three points, you get relegated. I think I’ll take that.”
