Jamahl Mosley credits ‘timely’ Pistons for Magic’s lack of Game 2 rhythm
The Orlando Magic were slapped with a reality check on Wednesday after losing to the Detroit Pistons, 98-83, in Game 2 of their first-round series in the playoffs at Little Caesars Arena.
After a tied score at halftime, the Pistons waxed hot in the third quarter, outscoring the Magic, 38-16, en route to the victory, evening the best-of-seven matchup.
The Pistons displayed their aggressiveness and physicality, especially in the second half, which disrupted the Magic’s rhythm. Even Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley admitted that Detroit set the tone.
“That’s part of the game. I think they did a heck of a job of reaching, grabbing, holding, and turning us over a few times. They were timely turnovers, timely plays. Again, you have to give them credit for how they came out and how they protected that paint and our ability to get downhill,” said Mosley in the postgame conference.
The Magic were held to just 37 points in the second half. Overall, they shot only 33% from the field, including 8-of-32 from three-point land. They were also badly outrebounded, 57-42.
However, Mosley, who is rumoredly in the hot seat, remained unfazed and stressed that they need to “keep our minds right” as they fly back to Orlando for Game 3.
“It’s great to get back home, in front of the best fans that we have. I think our ability to come out with the right type of energy, the right focus, the right amount of physicality, understanding exactly how they’re swinging and how they’re punching from the beginning of the game,” added Mosley.
Jalen Suggs had 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Paolo Banchero added 18 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
The Magic are looking to advance to the second round for the first time in 16 years.
