Is Timberwolves’ Ayo Dosunmu playing in Game 1 vs. Spurs?
Ayo Dosunmu missed last Thursday’s Game 6 win versus the Denver Nuggets, but the midseason addition still played an important role in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ upset victory over the No. 3 seed in the opening round of the NBA playoffs. He will be even more valuable in the team’s second-round series against the stellar San Antonio Spurs, especially with franchise keystone Anthony Edwards nursing a bone bruise and Donte DiVincenzo recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. Dosunmu is dealing with his own physical obstacles, however.
The 26-year-old guard was forced to watch from the bench while the Wolves finished off the Nuggets, as he continues to battle right calf soreness. Following a scorching-hot stretch — scored 86 points from Games 3-5 — he is surely itching to get back on the floor and help Minnesota earn its third straight trip to the Western Conference Finals. Dosunmu remains on the injury report, however.
With Monday’s Game 1 battle versus the Spurs looming, fans anxiously await word on the young spark plug’s status. Here is what we know.
Timberwolves might need Ayo Dosunmu if they have any hope of stunning Spurs
Dosunmu is listed questionable for the series-opening contest versus San Antonio. Edwards has the same designation, which means Minnesota could face a grueling test in the Frost Bank Center. Wolves head coach Chris Finch will rely on his team’s physicality and experience to withstand a superior Spurs squad.
Depth will come into play at some point, though. One can only push past their limits so much before fatigue takes effect. Even if Ayo Dosunmu is unable to compete in Game 1, the Timberwolves will need him to provide reliable production as this series progresses.
He averaged 21.8 points versus the Nuggets while shooting 60.9 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from behind the 3-point line. Replicating such output is difficult to fathom, but the 2021 second-round draft pick is definitely capable of making a visible impact.
It remains to be seen if he will have the opportunity to do so on Monday. Tip-off is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.
