The Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Following up on the T20 World Cup, this edition of the IPL is expected to proceed with the same frenzy and fervour. RCB come into this season as defending champions after lifting their much-awaited maiden trophy in 2025. The Rajat Patidar-led side will be expected to carry the same momentum into 2026.

SRH finished sixth in 2025 and will be looking to better that result and make the playoffs. Booth teams are filled with stars who can turn games around singlehandedly.

Here are 3 key player battles for Match 1, RCB vs SRH, IPL 2026:

3. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar vs Travis Head

In whatever form, good or bad, that Travis Head finds himself in, he is a dangerous player, possessing the ability to take games away from the opposition with ease. He is coming off the back of a dismal T20 World Cup campaign with Australia and will look to make amends in the IPL by providing Sunrisers Hyderabad with blistering starts and high scores.

With Travis Head set to start at the top, the responsibility to keep him in check would fall to Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. The experienced Indian bowler excels with the new ball, being able to move it both ways and keep it tight with his lengths. He will be expected to lead RCB’s attack as the senior bowler in the absence of Josh Hazlewood.

2. Krunal Pandya vs Heinrich Klaasen

Krunal Pandya was one of RCB’s key players last season. The lead spinner with the ball, Krunal, stepped up, even delivering a Player-of-the-Match performance in the final. He is expected to continue the same role for RCB in the new season.

Up against him will be Heinrich Klaasen, one of the most feared spin-hitters in the world. He is coming off a successful 2025 for the Sunrisers in 2025, scoring over 400 runs. The pair have not often met in matches, with just two previous encounters amounting to just nine balls. Yet, the profiles of these players make this an exciting matchup to keep an eye out for.

1. Virat Kohli vs Harshal Patel

In the absence of Pat Cummins, Harshal Patel automatically becomes the main strike bowler for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The two-time Purple Cap winner is expected to continue picking up regular wickets. Having played for the Royal Challengers, he knows the ground and its intricacies inside-out and is expected to be a threat with his changes of pace and variations.

Against him, Virat Kohli is looking for another run-laden season as he finally ended his wait for an IPL crown after a brilliant campaign with the bat. In 47 balls, Kohli has scored 80 runs against Harshal, striking at a brilliant 170.2, and has been dismissed twice.
