Five-time champions Mumbai Indians kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium. The five-time champions, who last won a title in 2020, come into the 2026 season after a finish in the playoffs in 2025. KKR, on the other hand, are coming off the back of a dismal eighth-place finish and a squad overhaul in the mini-auction ahead of its nineteenth edition.

While both teams have absences in their squads, they still have stars who can decide the outcomes of the games.

Here are 3 player battles for MI vs KKR, Match 2 of IPL 2026

3. Finn Allen vs Trent Boult

While previously being part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad, it is in 2026 with the Kolkata Knight Riders that Finn Allen is expected to play a major role. Allen comes into IPL 2026 as one of the most dangerous batters in the shortest format, capable of clearing the ball at will. He scored a blistering 33-ball century against South Africa in the semifinals of the 2026 T20 World Cup and is expected to perform similarly for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Trying to stop his threat would be Mumbai Indians’ star pacer Trent Boult. The left-arm pacer is still a threat with the new ball and will be expected to keep his compatriot in check before he tees off early. Boult is yet to dismiss Allen in 17 balls while playing against each other. Allen has scored 43 runs in those balls, striking at over 250.

2. Suryakumar Yadav vs Sunil Narine

India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain comes into the 2026 IPL on the back of one of his most prolific seasons in the IPL. With 717 runs at an average of 65.18 and strike rate of 167.91, he finished the 2025 season as the Most Valuable Player. Multiple franchise records were shattered and the local boy will be expected to continue from where he left off in 2025.

Up against him is KKR veteran Sunil Narine. The former West Indies spinner is still one of KKR’s main bowlers, and is expected to lead the spin attack alongside the able support of Varun Chakravathy. In the 73 balls Suryakumar has faced of Narine’s bowling, he has scored 91 runs, at a strike rate of 124.7, but is yet to be dismissed.

1. Hardik Pandya vs Varun Chakravarthy

Two players who come into IPL 2026 with a chip on their shoulders. Hardik Pandya, appointed captain in 2026, is yet to win the IPL with the five-time champions. While he was a vital part of four of the five triumphs, he will look to change his fortunes in his third season. He is expected to contribute with the bat after a successful T20 World Cup campaign.

Varun Chakravarthy is coming off the back of a concerning T20 World Cup campaign, where despite his returns of 14 wickets, the joint-highest in the tournament, he was taken down with ease by batters. He will be looking to make amends with a solid start in the IPL. This is a favourable matchup for Varun. In the 25 balls he has bowled, Hardik has only been able to score 22 runs, at a strike rate of 88, and has been dismissed once.
