Iowa football adds former Peyton Manning OC to coaching staff

For years, Iowa football has been looking for new ways to revolutionize its offense. Kirk Ferentz has tried just about everything, from new coordinators to the transfer portal to different styles of play, but the offense has never been able to compete with the best offenses in the Big Ten.

Even in Iowa’s best years near the top of the Big Ten, the Hawkeyes are always a defense- and special teams-oriented team, with the offense acting purely as a supplementary unit. Now, Iowa is making a big move on its coaching staff to try to improve.

Ahead of the 2026 summer, Iowa has added former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator and Iowa alum Tom Moore to its coaching staff as a senior consultant to the head coach and an offensive analyst, via Scott Dochterman of The Athletic.

Moore is 87 years old and is a former Iowa quarterback. He now returns to his alma mater to try and help it figure out its offensive woes.

Moore started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Iowa all the way back in 1961, and he has built a ton of experience on the sidelines in the time since then. He has spent the last seven seasons working as a consultant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is now heading back to the college ranks.

The Minnesota native is best known for his 11 seasons as the Colts offensive coordinator from 1998-2008, where he worked with Peyton Manning on some elite offenses. The Colts finished as a top-five offense in the NFL eight times during those 11 seasons under Moore, and they won the Super Bowl at the end of the 2006 season with him playing a big part on staff.

Iowa has always been a great offense away from contending with the truly elite teams in the Big Ten, and last season was no different. With Moore working with the team behind the scenes and providing his expertise, maybe this is the year that the Hawkeyes break through and compete with the likes of Ohio State and Oregon at the top of one of the best conferences in college football.
