Indiana Hoosiers add former Notre Dame star to backcourt

The Indiana Hoosiers landed Notre Dame transfer guard Markus Burton on Monday, their third commitment of the day and offseason in addition to Jaeden Mustaf and Darren Harris.

The 5-foot-11 junior arrives in Bloomington after spending three seasons at Notre Dame and building a solid body of work. In 69 career games (68 starts), he averaged 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 33.2% from three-point range.

Burton showed real growth in his sophomore year during the 2024-25 season, as he led the ACC in scoring with 21.3 points per game and shot 37.5% from beyond the arc, earning him second-team All-ACC honors after being named ACC Rookie of the Year and a third-team selection in 2023-24.

Injuries have gotten in the way of Burton’s last two seasons. A knee injury kept him out for five weeks during the 2024-25 campaign, and he was restricted to just 10 appearances after suffering a broken ankle in December 2025 that required surgery the following season. Before the injury, Burton was averaging 18.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game and had been named a preseason All-ACC first-team selection. He is likely to receive a medical redshirt after limited appearances in the last season.

A former Indiana Mr. Basketball (2023) out of Penn High School, Burton returns in-state as one of the top-rated portal players, ranked between No. 22 and No. 24 nationally by recruiting services. Having averaged at least 17 points per game in every season, he looks set to step in as Indiana’s starting point guard.

With only a handful of returning players before the portal additions, Burton is expected to take control of the offense. His career averages, high usage, and experience as a primary scorer make him the central piece in the Hoosiers’ rebuilding backcourt heading into the 2026-27 season.
