Hurricanes’ Taylor Hall may have subtly trolled Flyers after OT goal

The Carolina Hurricanes found themselves in an unfamiliar situation so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as they trailed for the first time so far in the playoffs. The Philadelphia Flyers held a 2-0 lead in Game 2, but the Canes made the comeback, forcing overtime. In overtime, Taylor Hall would bury the game-winner, giving Carolina the 2-0 series lead.

After hitting the game-winning goal, Hall seemingly trolled the Flyers, according to Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.

“It was a gritty goal,” Hall said.

It may have been a subtle shot at the Flyers mascot, Gritty. Gritty is a seven-foot-tall orange-furred mascot with googly eyes and donning Flyers gear. According to the Flyers, Gritty emerged because his secret hideout was disturbed due to the construction of the Xfinity Mobile Arena. Since his emergency before the 2018-19 season, he has become an internet sensation. He appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and did stunts on Twitter, becoming the most followed account among NHL mascots.

He has since made guest appearances on shows such as Family Guy, Abbot Elementary, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and The Amazing Race. As one of the more popular mascots in the NHL, it seems Hall chose his words carefully when taking his shot at the Flyers. Still, Hall knows that while he scored the game-winner, he did not have his best game, as he told the media after the game.

“I didn’t do a very good job of attacking tonight personally. I got that puck, and I just wanted to get to the middle of the ice as much as I could,” Hall said. “You know, as you get older and you play this game a while, you’ve got to figure out if you don’t have your A game, do you maybe have your B-minus game or something close to that. You find a way to contribute. And that’s hockey.”

Hall has contributed plenty so far in the playoffs. He has found the back of the net three times while adding six helpers, giving him nine total points. His six assists and nine points are both career playoff highs for the 34-year-old forward.

Now, the series shifts from the home Stormy, the red pick mascot of the Hurricanes, to the house of Gritty for Game 3. Game 3 is set for Thursday night as the Flyers look to avoid a 3-0 deficit in the series.
