Hurricanes’ blazing playoff record is good news for Golden Knights series
The Carolina Hurricanes have evened the series with the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final. It was a historic rally that brought the Hurricanes victory, scoring three goals in the final ten minutes of regulation on the way to the win.
With the victory, the team also set more playoff history, according to ESPN Insights.
“The Hurricanes’ 13th postseason win this year is tied for the most wins by any team in their first 15 games to begin a postseason, along with the 2022 Avalanche, 2012 Kings, 1988 Oilers, 1987 Oilers and 1981 Islanders,” ESPN Insights posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The Hurricanes swept the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, taking out the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers. The team would then lose in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, before winning four straight over the Montreal Canadiens. The Canes then lost Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final before making the historic comeback in Game 2.
The good news for Hurricanes fans is that the prior five teams to have won 13 of their first 15 games in the playoffs have gone on to lift the Cup.
The 2022 Colorado Avalanche also had two sweeps in the first three rounds, and then won the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final before losing game 16 of the playoffs to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 2012 Los Angeles Kings would win 14 of their first 16 game after nearly sweeping the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Final, but fell in Games 4 and 5 before finishing the series.
The 1988 Edmonton Oilers were the most dominant of the group. They lost games in the first round and Campbell Conference Finals before sweeping the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final, going 16-2 in the playoffs. Finally, the Islanders swept a best-of-five series in the first round of the playoffs before winning eight of the next ten games. They also nearly swept the Minnesota North Stars in the Cup Finals but lost Game 4 before winning the series in five games.
Jordan Stall credited the fans for the victory in Game 2, but now the team hits the road for Game 3 on Saturday with puck drop at 8 pm ET.
