How Yankees will honor late John Sterling for rest of season

In the wake of the shocking death of John Sterling, the New York Yankees will honor the legendary announcer in a subtle (but profound) way.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Yankees announced that they will be wearing a customized memorial patch on their uniforms starting with their game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, May 18.

“The Yankees today announced that they will pay a season-long tribute to John Sterling by wearing a customized memorial patch on their uniform sleeves beginning at the start of their next homestand,” the announcement read. “The team will continue to acknowledge Sterling’s passing with ‘JS’ stitching on the back of their caps through their game on Sunday, May 17, at the Mets.”

The patch features the Yankees’ iconic pinstripes in the background, and an old-school microphone with the team’s logo is front and center.

On Monday, May 4, 2026, Sterling died in Englewood, New Jersey. He was 87 years old at the time of his death, and details surrounding his death were kept quiet initially.

His death came a few months after he had a heart attack. Sterling left behind an impressive legacy as a broadcaster. He famously had a streak of calling 5,651 consecutive games from 1989 to 2019.

While he retired in 2024, Sterling did return during the Yankees’ postseason run. He called his last game on Oct. 30, 2024, during Game 5 of the World Series between the Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Unfortunately, the Yankees lost the game and the series that year.

Sterling was born and raised in New York and went on to become the voice of the Yankees. He also called games for the then-Baltimore Bullets, who have since become the Washington Wizards, before calling games for other New York sports teams like the Raiders, the Stars, and the Islanders.
