How Yankees’ Cam Schlittler owned Brewers despite taking 108.5 mph liner off leg

As the New York Yankees faced the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, starting pitcher Cam Schlittler was hit on the leg by a 108.5 MPH comebacker. Yet, he still put up a dominant performance on the mound.

The Yankees came up short in extra innings, 4-3. But Schlittler threw six innings of scoreless baseball, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out six. While he had to deal with the pain throughout the game, the right-hander did everything in his power to fight through it, via Casey Drottar of MLB.com.

“I think it actually helped me get the fastball where I needed to get it,” Schlittler said. “I wasn’t too worried out there about how that was going to affect me.”

Manager Aaron Boone obviously came away impressed with his performance. He and the coaching staff were paying close attention to Schlittler and didn’t want him to exert himself. But in the end, he was able to finish out a near perfect six innings.

“He’s a stud,” Boone said. “He’s just a great competitor, and obviously a great pitcher. He settled in and obviously pitched awesome.”

“I kept trying to be pretty firm as far as, ‘Tell us the truth,’” Boone continued. “He was just more mad at himself for not throwing a strike in the warmup pitches. That’s why he kept throwing it.”

Through his first nine starts in 2026, Schlittler holds an MLB leading 1.35 ERA and a 59/9 K/BB ratio. Even as the Yankees’ pitching staff continues to get healthier, the right-hander will remain a key member of the rotation.

New York will hope Schlittler doesn’t take any more hard hit in his next start. The Yankees can’t afford to not have his arm on the mound the way he is pitching.
