How Hurricanes, Golden Knights pulled off historic first in Stanley Cup Final Game 1

The Vegas Golden Knights took the first game of the Stanley Cup Final over the Carolina Hurricanes. It was a historic comeback effort by the Golden Knights that gave them the series lead in the 5-4 victory.

The Golden Knights became the first team to overcome a multiple-goal deficit on the road in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. They were also part of more history on Tuesday night, per The Athletic.

“Barbashev’s goal came 30 seconds into the second, making this the first Stanley Cup Final game in history where there was a goal in the opening 30 seconds of the first two periods,” The Athletic noted.

The first goal of the game came from Nikolaj Ehlers, just 25 seconds into the first period. Ehlers would add another goal in the period, but Shea Theodore made it a one-goal game before the end of the period. Then, just 30 seconds into the second period, Ivan Barbashev scored the historic goal, tying the game for the Golden Knights. William Karlsson gave Vegas their first lead of the night just over four minutes later. Still, Jordan Stall tied the game in the third.

Early scoring did not end with the first two periods, as Brett Howden scored his 11th goal of the playoffs just 1:21 into the third period. Shayne Gostisbehere would tie the game for the Hurricanes. With just 3:34 left in the third period, Tomas Hertl scored what would be the game-winning goal.

The Hurricanes will look to avoid going down 2-0 in the series in Game 2 on Thursday night with puck drop at 8 pm ET.
