Hornets’ LaMelo Ball repeatedly returns to 1 idiom after loss to Magic

The Charlotte Hornets’ season ended Friday night with a 121-90 loss to the Orlando Magic in the Play-In Tournament.

Orlando took control just 2:15 into the first quarter and never trailed, building a 38-16 advantage after the opening period. By halftime, the Magic had built a 68-37 lead after shooting 5-for-20 from the field in the first quarter and turning the ball over six times.

Charlotte had trouble finding its rhythm throughout the first half, managing only 13 made field goals before the break while also coughing up 14 turnovers. The Hornets were led by LaMelo Ball, who finished with 23 points on 7-for-17 shooting, including 3-for-8 from three-point range and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, along with five assists and two rebounds in 25 minutes.

However, Ball was limited early, scoring just two points while picking up three fouls and going scoreless until Orlando had already stretched its lead to 35 points late in the half. He scored 21 of his 23 points in the third quarter.

In his postgame remarks, the 24-year-old kept circling back to the same phrase, “You live, you learn,” as he reflected on the defeat.

“Obviously, hurt a lot, but I feel like it’s all just learning lessons,” said Ball. “You live, you learn, you evolve, and you move on, you know?”

Ball concluded the season averaging 20.1 points, 7.1 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 28.0 minutes per game. He reached at least 20 points in 35 of 72 regular-season appearances and also scored 20 or more in both Play-In games.

The Hornets’ NBA-leading playoff drought, dating back to 2016, continued with the loss. Meanwhile, the Magic, led by Paolo Banchero’s 25 points, earned the No. 8 seed and will open their first-round series against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
