Hidden story behind Fernando Tatis Jr.’s slump suggests breakout is coming
What in the world is going on with Fernando Tatis Jr.? The San Diego Padres superstar is going through a rough patch of unlucky baseball right now. His advanced metrics suggest that he is doing everything right, but just isn’t getting the results he deserves. Let’s break down the story behind the slump and why a breakout is on the horizon.
Let’s not get it twisted, Fernando Tatis Jr. is still playing some good baseball right now. The issue is that there are a few things that are affecting his slug. This slug slump dates back to last season for Tatis Jr. When May started in 2025, Tatis Jr. had eight home runs and was batting .345. However, he hit just .184 in the month of May with only five home runs and four doubles. He followed up with only two homers and four doubles in June. After what looked like he would break out and have an MVP-caliber season, Tatis Jr. finished the season with a .268 average, .814 OPS, 25 home runs, 71 RBIs, and .446 SLG. His SLG went from the low .700’s in April down to well below .500 by the end of the season.
Before the 2026 season, Tatis Jr. joined Team Dominican Republic alongside his teammate Manny Machado. Tatis Jr. was one of the best hitters of the tournament, and he showcased a few electric moments.

That home run against Venezuela ended up being the last home run Tatis Jr has hit in a baseball game. He did not hit one during spring training and has yet to do so this regular season.
Tatis Jr. has not lost his power. In fact, as of April 30, the star is the major league’s leader in hard-hit balls. It is difficult to comprehend how the MLB leader in hard-hit balls does not have a home run. Those WBC moments were not even two months ago. Something has to give eventually.

Fernando Tatis Jr is dismantling baseballs, but doesn’t have a HR yet because he’s taking out families of earth worms every game

As Fuzzy mentions in his post, Tatis Jr. is not pulling the ball like he used to. Fernando is actually doing a very good job of working better counts and trying to put the ball in play rather than striking out. He has an entirely new approach at the plate than what we are used to seeing.
Instead of him hitting 425ft home runs to left-center field, Tatis Jr. is instead trying to take advantage of what the pitcher gives him and essentially hoping for the best. He’s hitting the ball so hard that it’s expected that they will turn into more hits. It just hasn’t happened that way in just over one month of play.
A breakout is coming for Tatis Jr. The Padres are playing very well without him, Machado, and Jackson Merrill all hitting the ball consistently. San Diego is 19-12 on the season, which is good for second place in the NL West. They are just 0.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers, ahead of the game against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. The Padres are a good team once again in 2026, and this has to be motivating for Tatis Jr.
The Friars don’t need him to play like an MVP every single night. The team just needs him to play like himself. The way he used to play before all the injuries. Fernando still has the swag, the aura, the fame, and the skillset to be one of the best players in the game. That is never going to change.
