Heat’s Pat Riley makes eye-opening admission about ‘final say’ in Miami front office
Since 1995, Pat Riley has been the sun around which the Miami Heat has orbited. Or is he?
Although Riley’s reputation is that of a calculated mastermind with near-total control of the franchise he joined 31 years ago, Riley, in a press conference today, effectively pointed the finger toward ownership for making — or possibly more important, not making — certain moves.
“There are times when he said no, ‘I don’t think we should go down that road.’ And that was it, you move on,” Riley said of Heat owner Micky Arison. “And that is the way it is today. I don’t have final say here. I never had it. Never had it when I came, and quite frankly, I don’t think I want it.”

How often Micky Arison, who hired Riley shortly after becoming the Heat’s owner, says no to the longtime coach-turned-executive remains a question. But it does seem interesting that Riley, who is often almost entirely credited with building teams that delivered three championships this century, would say now that he has not had the final say in personnel decisions. It is also intriguing that Riley specifically mentioned that Nick Arison, Micky’s son, who is the team’s CEO, has had the final say in recent years.
The clarification, in successful times, would mean very little. If anything, it would likely be as a positive sign that Riley is crediting Arison in such a manner. But these are not successful times.
The Heat are coming off their first season without a playoff berth in seven years, which makes it also the third year in a row that Miami has not won a playoff series. In recent years, Riley has been criticized more frequently for failing to put a competitive roster together.
This past year, Miami went 43-39 and lost in the Play-In.
