Heat’s Erik Spoelstra on Norman Powell’s timely return ahead of Play-In Tournament
MIAMI – With the Miami Heat taking on the Charlotte Hornets in the play-in tournament, with each team on the brink of elimination, the team needs all of its playmakers to be at their best, including star Norman Powell. As fans lock in their bold predictions for the Heat’s play-in tourney matchup against the Hornets, Powell could be an X-Factor heading into the matchup.
While Powell earned his first career All-Star nod in his first year with Miami, the second half of the season has been a frustrating one, filled with injuries and dealing with a rough upper respiratory illness. Also dealing with an uncertain role, whether he’s starting or coming off the bench, the regular-season finale win over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday showed that All-Star Powell might’ve returned.
Powell would record 25 points off the bench on eight of 17 shooting from the field, three of seven from deep, with even head coach Erik Spoelstra noticing positivity in the veteran guard’s play.
“I think it was important, because this is probably the best I think he’s looked physically,” Spoelstra said. “It’s been a tough stretch for him with the injuries and, you know, the sickness; he hasn’t been able to get into full rhythm. This one looked a little bit more like himself.”

Heat’s Norman Powell on dealing with health issues
Besides the multiple groin issues Powell dealt with, it was also an upper respiratory illness that kept him out for four games, with the star guard saying to ClutchPoints how “tough” it was and that he’s in a better place.
“This is the healthiest I’ve been in terms of just being able to do what I want, not get super fatigued, even in the games I played in return, and I was still coughing up and trying to catch my breath and stuff throughout the course of the game, but finally clearing up symptoms and things like that. So it felt good,” Powell said.
Asked Norman Powell if this has been the best he’s felt in a a while physically.
