Grimsby, despite finishing seventh in the league following last week’s draw at Tranmere on the final day of the season, head into the play offs in the better form of the two sides, with three wins (in which they scored 10 goals) in theri last four matches.

Two of those victories came against teams who occupied play off spots at the time, in a strong to finish to the season which saw David Artell’s side win seven of their last 10 matches.

The Mariners head into Sunday’s first leg having lost only one of their last 13 league games at Blundell Park, including a run of four wins in their last five on their home patch, notably beating fellow play-off chasers Swindon 4-0 in their final home game of the regular season.

Salford make the trip to Lincolnshire with just one defeat in their last seven but will be kicking themselves after missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the season after only managing a goalless draw against a Crawley side who finished 22nd in the table.

Karl Robinson’s side have spent most of the season in the play offs, spending only a week outside the top seven after they broke in back in late November.

Despite missing out on that all important top three finish by just one point, the Ammies head to Blundell Park have won only one of their last three matches away from home, and have lost five of their last six games against Sunday’s opponents.

Grimsby are now just three games away from promotion to the third tier, a division they haven’t played in since 2004, while Salford are hoping to reach tier three for the very first time in the club’s history.
