Giants’ Tony Vitello sounds off on wild Rafael Devers situation

It has been a tough year for first-year San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello and his team. The Giants were hoping to contend for a playoff spot in the National League West, but they are in fourth place with a 31-46 record. They are just one game ahead of the last-place Colorado Rockies.

The Giants were just swept in a three-game series by the Miami Marlins. They dropped a 2-1 decision Sunday when they could not rally in the ninth inning. Rafael Devers led off the top of the inning with a base on balls and manager Tony Vitellow inserted Jonah Cox to pinch run for Devers.

However, Devers did not want to come out of the game and gestured wildly for Cox to go back to the dugout. His hand motions continued until Cox had gotten to first base and the umpire informed Devers he had to leave the field because he had been replaced.

Devers immediately stormed into the Giants locker room. Vitello was hoping Cox could use his speed to steal a base, but the Giants went quickly in the inning and the Marlins had their victory.

After the game, Vitello tried to explain Devers’ reaction, saying that Devers was competitive and that he did not want to leave the game because he wanted to help the Giants win. Vitello did not want to explain any more about Devers’ decision to leave the dugout and enter the locker room. He said that he didn’t see Devers’ actions after he left the field.

Vitello will most likely speak to Devers about the incident, but it is unlikely he will make the details of that conversation public.
