Giants reach embarrassing low in Tony Vitello era after Rays sweep

The San Francisco Giants made the ballsy decision to hire straight from the college ranks as they looked towards Tony Vitello, esteemed manager during his time with Tennessee, to be the man to lead the team for the long haul. However, the early returns under Vitello have not been great, as they have fallen to 13-21 on the season, last place in the NL West, following their 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

This loss to the Rays marks their sixth in a row and their second consecutive sweep. Against the Rays, they could muster all of two runs against Tampa Bay’s 10, and during their losing skid, they have been outscored 26-9.

One common theme for the Giants lately has been their putrid offensive production. On the season, they have only scored a total of 106 runs, which is good for dead last in MLB. Their power production, in particular, has been woeful, as they have only hit 19 dingers as a team to start the 2026 season.

To that end, the 2026 Giants have now posted their third-worst scoring tally in franchise history through 34 games. Only the 1909 Giants (101 runs) and 1985 squad (103) have been worse, as pointed out by Josh Dubow of Associated Press.

It’s hard to blame Vitello for the Giants’ slump entirely. His big hitters have been MIA; for example, Willy Adames’ OPS is sitting at .582 at present while Rafael Devers’ is even worse at .562.

If there’s any silver lining to be had for the Giants, it’s that regression to the mean should hit hard soon. It’s better to get these poor plate appearances out of the way earlier in the season when there’s plenty of time remaining in the regular season to figure it out.

But Vitello, as a manager who came in with some level of hype, will have his work cut out for him moving forward, especially with expectations being high in San Francisco.
