Giants’ Cam Skattebo breaks silence on Fanatics Fest backflip controversy

The New York Giants are depending on their young QB-RB duo of Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo to create excitement and give head coach John Harbaugh’s team a chance to play winning football in the NFC East. That has been a rarity for the Giants in recent years, but Harbaugh’s ability to bring about a consistent effort and minimize mistakes should help the Giants play more competitively than they have in the past.

Skattebo is clearly an enthusiastic player and while the fans have loved seeing him perform his on-field gymnastics, those days may be over. Harbaugh had a talk with Skattebo about making sure he didn’t do anything to injure himself — such as an unnecessary back flip — and the message seems to have gotten through to the second-year running back from Arizona State.

“Obviously I do some dumb things here or there, but I learn from it,” he said, per Jordan Ranaan of ESPN.com. “My coach talked to me, told me how he felt. I learned from it. Will I do a backflip again? Probably not. You live and you learn and we move on.”

Skattebo changes his attitude

That change in attitude can be related to Skattebo’s overall intelligence. He knows that his job security with the Giants is clearly influenced by his coach’s confidence in him, and listening to Harbaugh can only help the running back in that area.

Skattebo botched one of his backflips at a FanFest event in mid-July. After suffering a fractured ankle last season — not the result of a backflip — Skattebo does not need to engage in any behavior that could put his season at risk.

Skattebo rushed for 410 yards and 5 TDs on 101 carries a year ago while playing eight games. Harbaugh would like to see Skattebo in the lineup throughout the full 17-game season.
