Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets sign All-Sun Belt selection

Scott Cross and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets made waves in the transfer portal as they landed a standout player from the Sun Belt. The player they recently acquired turned out to be Troy star Victor Valdes.

Valdes announced his decision to transfer to the Yellow Jackets on Friday, per On3 insider Pete Nakos. This marks a big move as the star forward leaves the Trojans after three seasons.

Valdes spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career as a project, mainly coming off the bench throughout the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns. This season was big as he earned a full-time starting job, putting in the work as he recorded his best campaign to date for Troy.

Going to Georgia Tech means he will use his senior year of eligibility, his final campaign in college basketball. He makes the move up from the Sun Belt to the high-major level to the ACC grounds.

What’s next for Georgia Tech after landing Victor Valdes

Scott Cross will look forward to reuniting with Victor Valdes, who had a breakout season under Cross’ direction at Troy before heading to Georgia Tech.

Valdes’ breakthrough came this past season as he took a big step forward in production to be named All Sun-Belt Third Team following a junior campaign in which he led the Trojans in scoring (14.8 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg) while also averaging 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He was the lone Troy player to score in double figures (14 points) in the team’s NCAA Tournament opening-round loss to Nebraska back on March 19.

Cross enjoyed a great stint at Troy before embracing the Yellow Jackets’ position. He spent seven seasons with the Trojans, achieving 20 or more wins for five consecutive campaigns to end his tenure. The last two were his best as he got Troy to the NCAA Tournament.

Georgia Tech hopes to get back to the graces of March Madness for the first time since 2021. This past season saw them finish with an 11-20 overall record, having gone 2-16 in its ACC matchups. As a result, they decided to replace Damon Stoudamire after three seasons with Cross.
