Footballer falls into 2.7m ditch as goal celebration goes horribly wrong
French midfielder Rayan Ghrieb quite literally experienced the full spectrum of ecstasy to agony.
Ghrieb scored deep in second-half stoppage time to put the icing on the cake in FC Magdeburg’s 2-0 win over Hertha in the 2. Bundesliga.

As he wheeled away to celebrate with the travelling supporters at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, things very quickly took a turn for the worse.
With a gap between the stand containing the away fans and a barrier on the edge of the athletics track, Ghrieb must have thought it’d be a safe landing when he hopped over the latter.
But footage of his celebration showed otherwise, as he immediately disappeared out of frame.
Some of Magdeburg’s supporters in the vicinity of Ghrieb reacted with shock upon realising the midfielder had fallen into a 2.7-metre concrete ditch.
The camera then panned to Magdeburg fans who continued their celebrations, perhaps still unaware about what had happened to the 26-year-old.
But the camera quickly cut back to Ghrieb, who had emerged from the ditch with a smile on his face and soaked up the winner with his teammates.
Ghrieb’s goal was his third for Magdeburg in the German second tier this season and his fifth across all competitions since arriving at the club last summer.
Alexander Nollenberger joined Ghrieb on the scoresheet as his 74th-minute strike broke the deadlock against Hertha.
Despite the win, Magdeburg remain bottom of the league with 13 points after 15 games.
As for Hertha, who were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2023 after ten years in the top flight, they sit 7th out of 18 teams.

Ghrieb was not the first individual to have fallen into the tribute at the Olympiastadion.
At Euro 2024, which was held in Germany, a Poland fan fell into the ditch during the nation’s clash against Austria.
Unlike Ghrieb, who walked away without any serious injury from the incident, the Polish supporter was not so lucky.
The man was left briefly unconscious following the fall and was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.
Austria won the contest 3-1.
