Five HBCU choirs compete for inaugural Stellar Awards recognition

For the first time ever, the Stellar Gospel Music Awards is introducing its inaugural “HBCU Choir of the Year” category—an exciting new honor that places HBCUs at the center of gospel music’s biggest night. What began as a celebration of individual artistry has expanded into a cultural milestone, recognizing the unmatched talent, discipline, and tradition that define HBCU choral excellence.

Five powerhouse programs have earned their place among the first-ever nominees: Howard University, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Southern University, and Fort Valley State University. Each choir brings its own unique sound, rich legacy, and campus pride to a category that is less about competition and more about celebrating a shared musical heritage that has inspired generations.

As anticipation builds for gospel music’s premier event, the new award represents far more than a trophy. It serves as a national spotlight on one of the most cherished traditions within HBCU culture, where every performance reflects a legacy of faith, excellence, resilience, and community.

The introduction of the HBCU Choir of the Year category marks a significant moment for both gospel music and higher education. For many students, participation in a gospel choir extends far beyond the stage. These organizations provide mentorship, spiritual growth, leadership opportunities, and a sense of belonging, in addition to serving as cultural ambassadors for their universities.

Each nominee enters the historic category with a legacy of excellence and a deep commitment to uplifting audiences through music.

Howard University’s Gospel Choir has established itself as one of the most respected collegiate gospel ensembles in the nation, earning recognition for its dynamic performances and dedication to spreading faith through song. Morgan State University’s Choir is widely celebrated for its musical excellence, having garnered acclaim both nationally and internationally through performances on some of the world’s most renowned stages.

North Carolina A&T State University’s Fellowship Gospel Choir serves as a vibrant reflection of one of the nation’s largest HBCUs, playing a significant role in campus culture and student life. Southern University’s Gospel Choir carries forward the rich gospel traditions of Baton Rouge, blending passion and purpose in every performance. Meanwhile, the Fort Valley State University Choir continues to showcase the strength of Georgia’s HBCU tradition, inspiring audiences through its talent, commitment, and growing impact within the gospel music community.

“This moment belongs to our students, alumni, supporters, faculty, staff, family members, and every person who voted, shared, reposted, encouraged, and prayed for us throughout this journey,” the Fort Valley State University Choir said in a social media post. “To be recognized on a national stage among some of the finest HBCU choirs in the country is an incredible honor and a testament to the talent, dedication, and excellence of our choir members.”

Several of the nominated projects also feature acclaimed guest artists. Howard University’s nomination includes Damien Sneed & The Levites and Kierra Sheard Kelly. Southern University’s nomination features Cameron Blain, while Fort Valley State University’s nominated project includes Loren Michelle and Tiffany Boone.

The recognition comes as the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards prepares to return to Charlotte, North Carolina. Central City Productions recently announced nominees across 31 award categories, along with six Gospel Radio categories. This year’s ceremony will be taped live under the theme, “Feels Like Home.”

The inaugural HBCU Choir of the Year winner will be announced on Aug. 15, 2026, at Spectrum Center in Charlotte. The ceremony will be hosted by legendary music artist  Kirk Franklin.
