Fever mascot reacts to ‘pal’ Sophie Cunningham re-signing

Among the many excited about Sophie Cunningham’s return to the Indiana Fever after she re-signed with the team in 2026 is Freddy, the team’s mascot.

Freddy Fever took to social media to share his excitement about Cunningham’s return. They are seeing hugging in the pictures shared by Freddy, and Cunningham is even holding a plushie of the mascot.

“My pal [Sophie Cunningham] is staying in Indiana [partying face emoji],” Freddy wrote. “See you soon Soph.”

Sophie Cunningham’s return to the Fever

Cunningham was an unrestricted free agent for the first time in her WNBA career in 2026. She spent 2025 with the Fever, and while she fielded all offers, she opted to return on a one-year contract.

She is coming off a season that was cut short due to an injury. Cunningham had to step up in place of other injured players like Caitlin Clark. In 30 games, Cunningham averaged 25.2 minutes, 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.

Her season ended during the Fever’s game against the Connecticut Sun on Aug. 17. She went down during the first half of the game, and the injury was later confirmed to be a torn MCL.

Now, she’s hoping to help the team get back on track after a disappointing 2025. The Fever finished the regular season 24-20, winning the Commissioner’s Cup early in the year, and they made the playoffs but lost to the Las Vegas Aces in the Semifinals.

Cunningham spent the first six seasons of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury. Her best season came in 2022 when she averaged 12.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

She was drafted by the Mercury out of Missouri during the 2019 WNBA Draft. During her collegiate career, Cunningham was a three-time First-team All-SEC player from 2017 to 2019. Additionally, she was named SEC Freshman of the Year and made the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2016.
