Ex-Red Sox manager Alex Cora drops cryptic hint amid Rafael Devers’ controversial moment

Rafael Devers and Alex Cora are long gone from the Red Sox, but the former Boston manager did not seem surprised by what he saw from Devers during the San Francisco Giants-Miami Marlins game Sunday.

Devers opened himself up to significant criticism with his behavior on the field in the ninth inning. Devers led off the top of the ninth inning for the Giants with a base on balls as the visitors trailed by a 2-1 margin. Giants manager Tony Vitello immediately sent out Jonah Cox to pinch run for Devers.

That move was not appreciated by Devers, who waved his hand at Cox and tried to send him back to the dugout because he did not want to come out of the game. Once Cox got to first base, Devers refused to leave until the umpire pointed out that Cox had already been officially put into the lineup.

Cora may still be upset with Devers

It was clearly an immature move by Devers and it showed up the Giants first-year manager. Cora was Devers’ manager for seven of his nine years with the Red Sox, and he issued a cryptic comment on his X account. He made a comment of “But, but” indicating that an excuse was likely coming from Devers.

It was a not-so-subtle criticism of Devers dating back to last year’s departure with the Red Sox. Devers had refused to play first base after an injury to Triston Casas had left Boston without its starter at that position. Devers had been angered earlier in the year when the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to play third base. That shifted Devers to designated hitter because Bregman had the better track record in the field.

He was asked to play first base by the Red Sox and his refusal led to last year’s trade to the Giants.
