Ex-NFL player with 110 companies and $7bn business empire launches new venture with Reggie Bush
Terrence Murphy saw a promising NFL career cut short by devastating injury, but went on to build a billion-dollar business off the field.
Drafted by the Green Bay Packers as a second-round prospect in 2005, the wide receiver out of Texas A&M — who set school records — featured in just three games of his rookie season before disaster struck.

Murphy was injured in October of that year, on a helmet-to-helmet hit with a Carolina Panthers player, during a kickoff return.
Teammate Najeh Davenport fumbled the ball, and when Murphy tried to retrieve it, he was hit hard.
The rookie was carted off the field and placed on injured reserve, and tests later showed he had spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spine near the neck.
As a result, the Packers released Murphy in 2006, and 12 months later, he officially announced his retirement from the NFL.
Former wide receiver turned from football to investing
Murphy excelled both on the field and in the classroom at Texas A&M, and while his pro football career was cut short, he turned his rookie earnings into his first business start-up in the real estate market.
“I started my first venture, TM5, and scaled it to $1.5 billion in sales in less than eight years,” the former athlete told Atletico Dallas, the recently-founded USL Championship soccer team, of which he has invested in.
“That start-up company had offers to be acquired, which introduced me to M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) and Venture Capital Investing.”
A decade on, and Murphy has made serious waves as an investor.
He has surpassed a massive $5bn in sales and acquisitions, and has built, acquired, or invested in more than 110 companies under the Terrence Murphy Companies portfolio — which has a total estimated value of $7bn.
Murphy is not the only former NFL player to make millions off the field — 49ers legend Steve Young has done the same.

One of the top real estate brokers in Texas, the former Packer has expanded far beyond property, and is launching a new venture alongside Super Bowl champion running back Reggie Bush.
Terrence Murphy and Reggie Bush seeking fund for unique private-equity firm
The pair’s private-equity firm, Synergy Sports Capital, will focus on controlling stakes in emerging sports leagues outside America’s traditional ‘Big 4’ — think Unrivaled basketball, the NWSL, Major League Pickleball and TGL Golf, for example.
According to a press release, the firm is targeting approximately $150 million in capital commitments for its inaugural fund, and is built on the belief that the next era of value creation in sports will come not from minority stakes in mature franchises, but from controlling investments in leagues positioned for structural expansion and growth.
The duo is said to be in talks with many potential investors, which Murphy told Front Office Sports (FOS) includes ‘athletes who you’d know if I said their names.’
Per the FOS report, the fund will invest at both the team and league level, and currently has one portfolio company — Atletico Dallas.
“Right now, most big investors are putting their money into established teams that are already priced at the top of the market,” Murphy said.

“We see a bigger opportunity in emerging leagues where fan bases are growing, media deals are expanding, and team values are still on the rise.
“In those environments, strong leadership and hands-on involvement can really move the needle over time.”
During an interview with FOS, Murphy suggested he and Bush are ‘destined’ to be leaders in the lower-middle market space of private equity in sports.
Former football stars are ‘kindred spirits’ in new venture
“I consider Terrence my brother,” Bush added.

Since returning from the NFL in 2017, after an 11-year career that saw him win Super Bowl XLIV and enter the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame, Bush has found new life on the golf course.
Behind-the-scenes, he is also developing his upstart golf league for pro athletes — The United Athletes Tour. While that is not currently listed on the Synergy website, it will likely fall under the firm’s umbrella, according to FOS.
“What Reggie’s doing with the Athletes Tour fits perfectly,” Murphy said.

He added the pair have become ‘kindred spirits’ through commonalities like family, sports and culture, as well as their interest in emerging sports leagues.
“I’m very passionate about working together because I was a lone wolf for so many years,” Murphy concluded of the partnership.
