Ex-Blackhawks star Patrick Kane toasts ‘best leader’ Jonathan Toews on his retirement

Former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews recently announced his retirement from the game of hockey. Toews played for his hometown Winnipeg Jets during the 2025-26 season after a couple seasons away. Now, he is officially hanging up his skates. And longtime teammate Patrick Kane took time to provide his thoughts on this news.

“Congrats to this legend on retirement. One of the best leaders the game has seen. I could not have asked for a better teammate to come into the league with and I’m proud of all our success together over the years,” Kane wrote on social media on Friday.

Kane and Toews were teammates on the Blackhawks through the 2010s and early 2020s, leading the franchise to great success. They won three Stanley Cups together in 2010, 2013, and 2015. The title in 2010 represented the Original Six franchise’s first Cup since 1961. In 2015, they won the Cup at home for the first time since that 1961 triumph over the Detroit Red Wings.

Their time together in Chicago ended in 2023. Kane was traded to the New York Rangers at the NHL Trade Deadline, with the Blackhawks well out of contention. That summer, Toews stepped away after dealing with various health issues.

Kane went on to sign with the Detroit Red Wings in November 2023. As mentioned, Toews eventually returned for the 2025-26 season. These two future Hall of Famers faced each other as opponents for the first time on December 31, 2025. The Red Wings defeated the Jets 2-1, and went on to take the second game of their season series by a score of 5-1 on January 24th.
