Ex-Alabama player used makeup, wigs to impersonate Michael Penix Jr., others in scam
Being an NFL quarterback is a dream for many fans of football. Michael Penix Jr. is living that dream as the quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. He may not be in the most enviable position as a QB, as Penix may not be the long-term answer for the Falcons. Still, one former Alabama football player wants to be him.
Former Alabama player, Luther Davis, has been using makeup and wigs to impersonate people, such as Penix, in a multimillion-dollar loan scam, according to Pro Football Talk.
According to the charges, Davis would apply for loans, and then dress to look like a current NFL player at closing to secure the loan. He impersonated Penix, as well as Xavier McKinner and David Njoku. Davis plans to plead guilty to charges that he “obtained at least thirteen fraudulent loans totaling more than $19,845,000.”
Of that nearly $20 million, over $11.5 million was obtained by pretending to be Penix, McKinney, and Njoku. His partner in the crime, CJ Evins, is also expected to plead guilty.
The scheme involved registering businesses in Georgia with company names closely related to the players’ names or initials. Davis and Evins would then open bank accounts and fraudulent email addresses before obtaining fake identification documents. The duo would then contact loan brokers, using the falsified documents. Davis would attend the loan closing in full disguise.
Davis was one of the first major recruits for Nick Saban when he joined Alabama. Saban was able to convince the defensive tackle to flip his commitment from LSU to Alabama, and he would be part of the 2009 team that won the BCS National Championship.
