Ever wondered how WWE contracts work? This former world champion has you covered

WWE contracts are often among the highest-paid or most lucrative in wrestling, as expected by fans. However, what is the reality behind WWE’s contracts? Are they really so highly rewarding, or is it just an illusion created by the fans?

Former World Champion Jinder Mahal, aka Raj Dhesi, recently opened up and shared an informative video on WWE’s contract details. Since leaving the promotion, Dhesi has been actively helping younger wrestlers understand the business side of the pro-wrestling industry. In a recent video uploaded on his social media, the former “Modern Day Mahajara” deconstructed WWE’s contracts and the “bucket system” model.

Mahal explained that every wrestler starts with a downside guarantee, which is the base salary. It is the bare minimum that WWE has to pay for signing someone to their roster. However, if a wrestler wants to make an enormous amount of money, they would have to earn bonuses by being on TV, wrestling in main event matches, and selling merchandise.

The former champion explained that it is where the “bucket system” kicks in. Throughout the year, every extra amount that a wrestler from a merch sale or a PLE gets thrown into that virtual bucket. If the Superstar has a great year and the bucket money accumulates more than their base salary, WWE then proceeds to issue a huge cheque for the difference at the end of the year.

Dhesi, 39, is a former WWE Champion and was part of the promotion for several years. Following his 2016 to 2024 run on the main roster and NXT, he was released from the promotion. He currently wrestles across different independent promotions from all across the world.
