ESPN star ‘stepping away’ indefinitely after life-saving amputation as Pat McAfee leads support
ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller is stepping away from the network.
In June, Miller was involved in a serious car accident that required life-saving surgery, and amputation of his left arm.

On Friday, he announced that he will take a leave of absence to focus on his recovery.
“To best focus on my healing and recovery, I’m stepping away indefinitely and will be placed on leave from ESPN,” Miller wrote on X.
“Thank you to all for the prayers and thoughts; please keep them coming.”
Miller also included an update on his recent procedures, and said that doctors were able to save his left leg after surgeries on his femur and patella.
“The surgery to remove my left arm was successful with hopes of an eventual prosthetic replacement,” Miller added.
“Similarly, the femur and patella surgeries were also successful and the fantastic surgery team was able to save my left leg.”
After the crash, the ESPN draft guru launched a GoFundMe campaign to support his recovery.
Pat McAfee donated $5,525 and Adam Schefter added $1,000 in support as it raised $51,147.
Matt Miller under investigation by Missouri Attorney General’s Office
However, it has remained inactive since July 3, likely thanks to accusations over fantasy leagues he was running.
On May 21, 2026, a Reddit thread titled ‘Matt Miller Leagues and Scam’ was posted, accusing the hospitalised miller of failing to payout.

“Anyone in a league run by ESPN’s Matt Miller and not get paid as a winner?” Reddit user ScroogeMcPanda posted.
“He has ghosted ours since the championship and provided zero communication on what funds went to charity/providing payouts to the winners.
“I’ve seen a few others in the same boat and wanted to see if this is a wider spread problem than a couple leagues.”
Over 150 people replied to the comments, sharing similar circumstances and including screenshots as proof.
At least seven people claimed they even paid $500 as a buy-in to enter these leagues. However, Miller was allegedly difficult to reach when they came to collect their winnings.
Awful Announcing revealed that the Missouri Attorney General’s Office have now launched an investigation into these claims.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the controversy could impact is eventual return to the Network.
Miller has been with ESPN since 2021 after working as Bleacher Report’s lead NFL Draft writer for more than a decade.
