Eagles’ Eli Stowers gets real on hardest part of transition from quarterback to tight end

While much has been said about Eli Stowers’ lack of blocking prowess coming out of Vanderbilt, to the point where some evaluated him as a big wide receiver, the Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end has only been playing the position for a few years now, beginning his college career as a quarterback at Texas A&M.

Asked what it’s like to make such a major transition in real time while serving as Diego Pavia’s top target at New Mexico State and then Vanderbilt during his rookie minicamp media availability session, Stowers broke down the process, noting that he’s embraced the new challenges of his new position.

“Yeah, I think just moving from quarterback and getting into blocking is just new. It’s really new, because obviously quarterbacks are never asked to block. And so it’s just something that’s new and you have to just learn the technique. I think that was not necessarily a hurdle, but the thing that you just have to learn the most is you really gotta get your technique down, and a lot of it is reps, and so you get the muscle memory down. And then the other side of it is just the will to want to block. And I have that, and I wanna be the best blocker that I can be from that point. It’s just learning my techniques and really practicing it.”

Widely considered the best pass-catching tight end in this year’s class, with an ability to fight through contact and make plays across the middle of the field in an AJ Brown-ian style, Stowers has sky-high potential to make an immediate impact in the Eagles’ offense. While he may not be asked to take on star edges like Myles Garrett solo right out of the gate, if Stowers can make the kind of plays he put on tape in college, he will be quarterback Jalen Hurts’ best friend after playing his position early on in college.
