Dywane Wade makes eye-opening admission on international basketball

In newly resurfaced comments from 2023, Dwayne Wade showed his appreciation for international basketball. In the 2000s, Wade was a member of the 2008 Redeem Team and the World Cup teams, in which he emerged as a key scoring threat later in his national career. He was also a part of the 2004 U.S. National Team, where they lost to Puerto Rico, Lithuania, and Argentina, leaving with a bronze medal.

In an appearance on SKWEEK SHOW, hosted by Tony Parker, Wade spoke about how his experience playing internationally gave him more respect for international players.

“Perception’s a funny thing. When I grew up from the community I’m from, if I seen a white boy, I’m like, ‘Oh, I got him.’ I don’t know him at all. It’s just a perception that he’s not better than me. He can’t be better than me, right? Like, you’ll hear a lot of African Americans speak from that space from an ignorant space, in a sense. But I think from a basketball standpoint playing, that was a thought. Like, oh, international players are soft, right? Then I played international basketball and got my ass kicked. And I was like, “Oh, no, they’re skilled.” Actually, the game is actually tougher. Actually, our game is a little softer, if you wanna be honest.”

Since his comments, Wade served as an analyst for the 2024 Olympics in France, paired alongside Noah Eagle. Wade saw the growth of the international game, with players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Victor Wembanyama surging to success.
